Our focus is on advancing the management of waste in remote and rural regions. The establishment of waste collection in such regions is challenging for an array of reasons, related to for example road infrastructure, lack of recycling facilities within close range, low awareness about the impacts of waste on the environment and health, logistics, lack of local waste roadmaps, widespread littering and open burning.

Improving the situation requires another strategy compared to for example advancing waste management in more developed regions and urban waste management in Indonesia. You can read more about this on our approach page.

In Labuan Bajo we built a waste collection and sorting facility, and an Environmental Learning Center which is open to stakeholders from other regions who like to come and learn. Our facility is open to all stakeholders to learn first hand how we process different waste flows – plastics – glass – carton – cans – food waste.

This is how we process glas waste generated by local hotels, restaurants and community members.

Marine tourism is a booming sector in Indonesia. This is how we promote the management of on-board waste, to support preventing dumping at sea, in line with MARPOL Annex V.
